Unley Road’s Rising Star Optometrist Has Grand Vision
Popular local optometrist, Cassandra Haines, from the Unley Shopping Centre’s family-owned and operated Eyes & Vision practice, returns to Unley Road after spending the week in Canberra lobbying politicians and policy-makers on the importance of eye health.
Recognised by national body Optometry Australia as a ‘rising star’ in optometry in South Australia, Cassandra was one of two young optometrists selected to represent the state (12 optometrists were chosen nationally) at the industry’s Rising Stars advocacy summit and conference, recently held in Parliament House, Canberra.
Organised by Vision2020 in partnership with Guide Dogs Victoria, Optometry Australia, Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO), and Vision Australia, the event allowed young optometrists like Cassandra, to share their vision for the future of the sector. They were also able to discuss the latest advances, technological achievements and developments in eye health and vision care with parliamentarians and policy decision makers.
“It’s humbling to have been recognised as a rising star in my field, and selected to represent South Australia on the important matter of eye health”, said Cassandra.
During her time in Canberra, Cassandra spoke passionately on an increasing problem with children’s vision.
“Since I started practicing, I’ve noticed an increase in myopia (medical short-sightedness) in my patients, especially the young ones. This comes from children spending long hours in front of computer screens, and less time outdoors. Myopia is a growing concern for children, and young people, in Australia and overseas.”
“I would like to see a radical shift in public perception for eye testing as a vital health examination, and am taking steps towards educating not only my patients, but the general public about this condition. If diagnosed early enough, I can significantly reduce the progression of myopia in young children.”
Cassandra recommends parents have their children’s vision checked at least once every year.
The Eyes and Vision Unley practice are renowned for their children-friendly practice, and school holiday program, where children are examined by “Fairy Princess” optometrists, and awarded with goody bags.
